High School Drama - Spring Production
On May 6th, 7th and 8th CCS will be presenting Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing at 7pm in the CCS gymnasium. Not only will you be able to enjoy the performances of our talented high school drama troupe and two guest middle school actors, but you will be entertained by some of CCS staff as well. You will not want to miss Mr. Khan, Mr. Myers, Mr. Murphy, Mr. Becker and Mrs. Lawrence in their debut performances! William Shakespeare, the most influential writer in all of English literature, was born in 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon, England. The 37 plays and 154 sonnets that bear his name have profoundly affected the course of Western literature and culture. Much Ado About Nothing is generally considered one of Shakespeare’s best comedies, because it combines elements of robust hilarity with more serious meditations on honor, shame, and court politics. Although the young lovers Hero and Claudio provide the main impetus for the plot, the courtship between the older, wiser lovers Benedick and Beatrice is what makes Much Ado About Nothing so memorable. Benedick and Beatrice argue with delightful wit, and Shakespeare develops their journey from antagonism to sincere love and affection with a rich sense of humor and compassion. Since Beatrice and Benedick have a history behind them that adds weight to their relationship, they are older and more mature than the typical lovers in Shakespeare’s comedies, though their unhealthy competitiveness reveals them to be childish novices when it comes to love.[1] Mark your calendars today so that you will not miss this delightful Shakespeare comedy. Tickets are $7 for general seating and can be purchased below or at the door the night of the performance. [1] http://www.sparknotes.com/shakespeare/muchado/context.html
